2026 has been a landmark year for whutupōro (rugby) at WHS. Following the launch of the school's inaugural Rugby Academy and high participation among Senior school students, the school fielded 1st XV, 2nd XV, and 3rd XV sides, an Under 15 and Under 14 team, and a Girls' 1st XV. With around 10% of the school population taking the field this season, teams displayed remarkable depth and achievement.
Season Highlights & Title Wins
The Girls' 1st XV capped off their campaign with a thrilling 29–27 win over Cromwell under the roof at Forsyth Barr Stadium, claiming the Central Otago competition title.
The Under 14s went one better, taking out the Otago-wide competition with a commanding 43–12 win over Dunstan High School.
The Under 15s enjoyed a standout season, being crowned South Island Secondary Schools Rural Livestock Champions in Westport after defeating John Paul II High School 57–14. The team also made history by competing for the first time in the Championship division of the Otago competition, going up against the region's traditional powerhouses and laying important groundwork for future WHS sides.
The Boys' 1st XV endured a hard-fought campaign, finishing 7th out of 18 teams in the Southern Schools Rugby Championship (SSRC). South Otago High School proved the side's bogey team in 2026, ending WHS's hopes on two occasions — including a tough loss in the Division 2 semi-final.
